Rhythm King and her friends :: I am disco |

Lesbians. Hmm, not really reknowned for their musical skills are they? Still we can't write them off just because of Su Pollard can we? Especially when one of my favourite singles of recent months 'Get Paid' a song all about wrecking your office was made by a trio of comfortable shoe-wearers a.k.a.. Rhythm King & Her Friends. Their album 'I Am Disco' can perhaps be best summed up in the English translation of the German press release: 'The song is not only musically structured with samples, which refreshes the female hip hop in a sister context.' What the fuck? The good news is however political the album may or may not be it doesn't come across like that, it's just thirteen ace songs, in a more similar vein to 'Luscious Jackson' than perhaps their contemporaries like Dynasty or Chicks on Speed though comparisons can be made. They all sing, they all play instruments and they have a xylophone. You get the picture, if you like foreign/yankee accents singing cool electro-new wave songs about random shit (bus drivers, computer viruses, people called Yvonne, etc.) with better than average beats then you really need look no further. If I was a girl and I could sing I'd be in Rhythm King & Her Friends (otherwise I'd be Holly Vallance). Lesbians are the new Queers, you heard it here first.
